History of the Shuttle

Community Transport in Selsey
The story of Community Transport in Selsey begins in 1996, when a small but determined group from St Peter’s Church saw a growing need in the local community. Many residents, particularly older adults or those without cars, were finding it difficult to get around Selsey, especially in areas not served by the Stagecoach bus network.
Recognising this transport gap, they took action. Their vision was simple but impactful: a local community bus service in Selsey that could reach streets and neighbourhoods that conventional buses couldn’t access. And so, the Selsey Shuttle was born.
The First Shuttle
The original vehicle, a bright red Mercedes-Benz minibus, quickly became a familiar and much-loved sight on Selsey’s roads. It offered affordable, accessible transport to residents across the town and ran successfully for 13 years. For many, it became a lifeline, offering independence, connection, and community.
A New Era
By 2009, the original bus had reached the end of its journey. But thanks to new government support through the Community Minibus Fund and a generous grant from the Selsey Southern Co-operative Store’s Community Fund, our present bus was introduced in 2016. This updated model brought additional features and continued the mission of delivering reliable and friendly community transport in Selsey.

Today, the service is proudly operated by the Selsey Shuttle Community Interest Company. The community transport service is run entirely by dedicated unpaid volunteers who give their time to serve the community, whether it’s providing essential shuttle runs to supermarkets or organising day trips and excursions.
As a not-for-profit initiative, the Selsey Shuttle is a testament to what community spirit and collaboration can achieve. With the continued support of volunteers and passengers alike, the service is going strong and evolving to meet the needs of Selsey residents.
